Defining the Default Billing Rates in a Case

Defining the Default Billing Rates in a Case

1. Once in a case, in the Case Details tab under Case Info, click Edit.

2. Under the Staff section, assign users and Hourly Rates for Attorney Responsible, Attorney Handling, Paralegal Handling, and Assistant Handling.

3. Click Save. These Hourly Rates will now be used for the Default Billing Rate of a User.

How does this work?

MerusCase will first check if the user you are enterting time for is set to a Staff Role on a case and it will use the rate that they have assigned to them for that case.

If you happen to be assigned in two different roles on a case. It will match that user to the Staff role that is the same as their Default Billing Level and use the rate that was assigned to that Staff role.

If you are not assigned as Staff on the case, then it will try to match your Default Billing Level with the rate for that Level/Role that is specified on the case (i.e. you are a Paralegal not assigned to the case, but there is a rate set for the Paralegal staff on that case).

If you are not assigned to the case, and there is not a rate set for your rate, then it will just default to the Attorney Responsible Rate that is assigned for that case.

If there are no staff rate and no attorney responsible rate, then it will default to your Default Billing Rate set in your User Account.

Finally, if there is no rate set anywhere it will default to $400.

Review of Default Billing Rates

  • If the User has been assigned on a case, then this billing rate will be used for what they were assigned as (in the case of two different roles, it will match their Default Billing Level to use that rate).

  • If no Staff Rate has not been set in a case, then it will use the user's rate specified on their Account settings.

  • If the User does not have a rate set on their account settings and there is no user match within the case, the billing rate for the Attorney Responsible will be used.

  • If the Default Billing Rate for a User has not been defined, there is no user match within the case, and there is no billing rate for the Attorney Responsible, the rate specified under User Preferences will be used (if that still isn't set, it will default to 400).
