Why You Should Work at Merus

We are a small software engineering company located in downtown Oakland, working in a fast-paced startup work environment. By joining our team, you will be working in an intelligent, flexible, and friendly environment with opportunities for growth. We are part professional services firm, part technology incubator, and all ambition.

Our premiere product, MerusCase, is the only online Practice Management System that curates the attorney experience around specific workflows based on jurisdiction and legal field. Everyday, Merus helps tens of thousands of attorneys, paralegals, and legal staff provide better results to their clientele.

The dynamic nature of our team means wearing a lot of hats and getting your hands dirty on product design, user experience design, software architecture, development, project management, quality assurance, and support. This doesn’t mean you’re expected to know all of these nor prevented from specializing, but it does mean you should be excited (instead of intimidated) by new challenges every day.

We're working the black and expect to more than double sales for the seventh year in a row in 2015. Interested in learning more about our culture? Check us out at meruscase.tumblr.com!

Current Opportunities

The following roles are open – we also accept speculative applications, but cannot guarantee that we’ll respond or have anything appropriate for you.

Front End (UI/UX) Designer

Turn Boring Business Apps into Art

Help us turn our highly functional, yet sometimes boring, business application into a work of art!

The ideal candidate will have a background in creative arts, know a little about marketing, and yet still know how to talk the engineering talk well enough to interact constructively with engineering people.

This is not a technical position, but you should know your way around engineering jargon and be able to prototype basic interactions in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. If you have ambitions of honing your JavaScript skills or exploring your marketing ideas in a coached, yet independently-driven environment, this position is perfect for you.

Responsibilities

  • Create eye catching mockups representing product (web application) designs and interfaces across a wide variety of target devices.
  • Dicing and splicing in Photoshop and Illustrator as needed to provide engineering with all of the graphical assets they need. Under aggressive deadlines, of course.
  • Defining, creating, and enforcing guidelines for user interface, branding, and messaging consistency.
  • Produce visual content as needed for marketing efforts, e.g., email newsletters, trade show collateral, etc.

Experience

  • Required: Web and application visual design. Please provide portfolio examples.
  • Required: Knowledge and understanding of HTML/CSS/JavaScript and how visual compositions translate to code.
  • Attention to detail and pixel perfection
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite and other design tools
  • Ability to collaborate across teams and deliver at a rapid pace
  • Desirable: A pragmatic penchant for marketing.
  • Desirable: Ability to write clean copy -- both for marketing purposes and that of a technical nature.

Other Info

If you're unproven, we're still interested in talking with you, but we'll probably create a contract/internship role for you for the first couple of months.

For more information, contact: careers [@] meruscase.com

To apply: Please email us a resume and a thoughtful cover letter that outlines three reasons why you are someone we should interview, focusing on how your past work experience has prepared you for this kind of position, and, if you’ve got some, a couple of URLs to recent online work. We weigh cover letters heavily and tend not to consider resumes without one.

Marketing/PR/Brand Coordinator

Are you stylish? Do you know what current buzz is trending on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google Plus? Do you have an eye for good design and well-formed copy? Can you make boring topics attention-grabbing, fun, and ultimately, drive leads to our sales team?

Responsibilities

  • Organize and coordinate our marketing efforts end-to-end. (With coaching -- this is not a senior position.)
  • Identify and execute marketing efforts in both real-world and digital arenas with a mindfulness around tracking effectiveness through analytics.
  • Crunch those analytics numbers and identify where we should reinvest. Advocate for those proven marketing efforts with fervor.
  • Write compelling copy to back all of this up. Review copy generated by engineering (like release notes and help articles) for brand consistency.

Experience

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Enthusiastic, driven and creative work style.
  • Fast learner, flexible work style.
  • Some technology background.
  • Some marketing experience (agency or corp comm) strongly preferred.

JavaScript Developer

JavaScript: The Good Parts

We’re looking to hire a JavaScript Jedi to join the Merus development team. Merus has a home grown JavaScript MVC layer that was built before Backbone had a spine. We use MooTools throughout the app and draw the entire interface from JSON data objects with no markup flying over the wire. We've innovated our way around client-side data storage across tabs and localized caching for immediate UI redraw without an XHR.

As a dedicated JavaScript developer, you will be using your skills to drive the overall user experience of a whole product, implementing everything from navigation and information architecture to the UI on individual features and in the look, feel, and speed of the application.

Responsibilities

  • Defining, architecting and building usable, modular, and beautiful front end code
  • Helping to architect the user interface of new and existing features

Experience

  • Required: Excellent JavaScript (plus MooTools -- fake it for the interview if you must), CSS, HTML skills
  • Required: Experience creating front end systems for rich internet applications
  • Required: Able to finish code – and take pleasure in seeing it deployed and used
  • Desirable: Experience with frameworks eg. Backbone
  • Desirable: Interest in growing your skills and pushing the envelope on what modern browsers can do
  • Nice to have: Some familiarity with coffeescript, node.js
  • Nice to have: UX experience in all its infinite variety
  • Nice to have: Database (MySQL, SQLLite, WebDB, Couch)

Deployment Coordinator

This role is part Project Manager, part Windows network admin, and part Quality Assurance.

Responsibilities

  • Creating, Defining, and Following Through on Data Migration projects on a per client basis.
  • Codify the Deployment Process

Experience

  • Required: Some familiarity with a desktop-based database, e.g. Microsoft Access, Visual FoxPro, or Filemaker
  • Required: Basic familiarity with Windows, Windows Networking, and System Administration
  • Required: Attention to detail -- you need to be able to see not only the forest and the trees, but the number of leaves on every branch
  • Required: The ability to empathize with your customers and advocate on their behalf
  • Nice to have: MySQL

PHP (LAMP) Web Developer

We are looking to hire solid developers, particularly those who take pleasure in finishing code and seeing it deployed.

Responsibilities

  • Web app development experience in PHP (although if you have a bit of disdain for some of PHP's idiosyncracies, you'll fit right in)
  • MySQL
  • Linux (preferably Ubuntu)
  • MVC (we're currently using CakePHP with some chagrin)
  • Some experience with at least one of these: Bash, Perl, or Ruby (Sinatra or Rails)
  • General Sysadmin or Devops skills
  • Nice to have: The nuances of HTTP caching
  • Nice to have:  Experience with Redmine
  • Nice to have: JavaScript (MooTools) and CSS

Document Creation Specialist

Word Font Style Admin Panel

This role entails creating Microsoft Word templates for our clients, who are legal professionals. No authoring or other copywriting is required, but it is necessary to understand what you are reading and translate loose descriptive terms (e.g., "insurance carrier") into specific data-driven "codes" generated by our software (e.g., "CASEFILE:carrier.name").

Other responsibilities include locating legal forms online (usually PDFs provided by government agencies) and mapping fields to those same data-driven codes.

Data entry, usually of raw contact information, also occasionally comes up, so familiarity with the typical spellings of common American names and surnames is helpful.

We largely consider this an internship position, so if you're still in school or a recent graduate, flaunt it. See Other Info, below.

Responsibilities

  • Formatting and Templating of client documents in Microsoft Word 2007 or later.
  • Formatting and Templating of court-provided forms using custom Merus tools.
  • Occassional data entry.
  • Occasional client interaction to retrieve, verify, and publish client documents.

Experience

  • User-level proficiency with Windows.
  • Experience authoring and formatting professional documents. Cover letters count. (Hint, hint)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word 2007 or later. Brush up on "merging" and "form letters" before your interview.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Meticulous and fastidious attention to detail.
  • Nice to have: Some formal experience with some form of desktop publishing.
  • Nice to have: Familiarity with the legal industry and/or legal professionals.

Other Info

If you're new to the software or legal industries, this is perfect for you!

We like to hire and promote internally, so this should be looked at as an internship position, hopefully leading towards one of the other opportunities listed here (including the "Speculative Applications" section below). As such, we will give special consideration to candidates who specify what role they see themselves growing into and why. You should also let us know if you are a currently enrolled student or have graduated recently.

The pay is modest, but smart people at our company move out of this role in a few short months.
